Mumbai continues to endure sweltering heat and high humidity, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a fresh yellow warning for the city and its neighbouring areas. On Tuesday, temperatures soared to 35°C in both the city and its suburbs, nearly one degree above normal. However, due to the high humidity, it felt more like 41-42°C , causing significant discomfort.
Starting Sunday, temperatures will decrease more as the monsoon nears, resulting in a notable cooling.
Relief expected with approaching monsoon
Despite the current heatwave, Mumbai witnessed clear skies and gentle breezes on Wednesday morning. The forecast predicts the same for the surrounding regions. Today’s temperatures ranged from a minimum of 28°C to a maximum of 35°C, with an average of 30.9°C. Winds were light, coming from the west at 5.6 kmph.
The IMD’s seven-day forecast indicates a slight decrease in minimum temperatures, with humid conditions continuing. From Sunday, temperatures are expected to drop further as the monsoon approaches, leading to a significant cooling by 4-5°C.
Meanwhile, Mumbai’s air quality remains satisfactory, with an AQI of 60 for PM10 particles. The IMD has also indicated that the monsoon is set to reach Mumbai by June 10, following its arrival in Kerala by May 31. Despite the current sunshine, the high humidity of around 77% is likely to continue causing discomfort for outdoor activities.
