Organ transplant surgeries at Lohia Hospital in Lucknow will now be eased with the addition of a new HLA machine at the Transfusion Department here. This prep instrument is used to conduct tests on a patient undergoing the surgery and can help predict whether or not the operation will be a success. So far, only SGPGI in Lucknow had a human leukocyte antigen machine to check donor-receiver compatibility before the surgery.
New HLA machine to improve success rate of organ transplant at Lohia Hospital
Dr. Ram Manohar Institute of Medical Sciences offers organ transplant facility but for so long, it did not have an infrastructure to check the antigen compatibility of the donor and receiver. Until now, the Lohia Hospital in Lucknow was dependent on other hospital and facilities to provide the test reports. However, the institute’s Transfusion Department will soon install a human leukocyte antigen machine here and has acquired all required permissions for the same.
This new installation will not only improve the success rate of surgeries but also reduce lags caused due to outsourcing. Reportedly, the machine will cost about ₹50 lakh. While several tests, both general and specific, are conducted before the actual surgery, the antigen test is a major prerequisite for the transplant to be a success.
According to the HOD of the Transfusion Department, to initiate an organ transplant surgery, blood samples of the organ donor and receiver are checked first. The process that follows is very complex and begins only when the blood groups match. Post this, an HLR test is conducted that inspects the antigen present in the leukocyte. Compatibility of the antigen is most important to initiate the surgery.
