In the wake of widespread avian flu, Lucknow Zoological Garden has tightened its safety measures to arrest any transmission of the virus. The authorities have further increased the monitoring of birds after the Kanpur Zoological Park reported four deaths of its winged inhabitants, although the cause of the death has not been identified yet. The samples of the deceased birds have been sent to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) in Bhopal.

The zoo authorities of Lucknow are maintaining extra vigilance on the health of the birds as cases of bird flu have flown in from states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala and Himachal Pradesh, as of now. The affected states have been strongly advised by the Centre, to strengthen their biosecurity protocols, sanitize the infected areas and properly dispose of the cadavers of the animals and birds, in an effort to curb the flu.
The Animal Husbandry Department is also making efforts to ensure that the poultry farms in the city are being cleaned and are sanitized. Moreover, the concerned authorities are providing the birds with mineral water and vitamin supplements in a bid to boost their immunity, so that they are safe from the disease. As per the claims of the Deputy Director of the zoo, the administration is taking all the required precautions and in line with it, a bird flu kit has also been arranged.
