Another milestone for Lucknow and its citizens! The long awaited Lucknow metro on the North-South route has been flagged off today and is here to herald a new era of public transport in the city. Lucknowites were eagerly waiting for the intra city rail system to become fully active and today, in a video conference from Kanpur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the metro.

The 23 kilometre North-South corridor from Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport to Munshipulia will be operational from today, 28 days before the scheduled deadline.

The metro ran non-stop all the way from the Airport to Munshipuliya metro station over a period of just 18 minutes.

The completed route of the Lucknow metro comprises of state of the art facilities in the stations as well as in the trains. Each of the coaches come equipped with mobile and laptop charging points, air conditioning, dynamic route display on LCD screens and, most importantly, disabled friendly seats.

To make the Lucknow metro stand at par with other metros of India, the stations are flush with automated ticket vending machines, smoke and fire detectors, CCTV cameras and even full fledged parking lots. The entire North-South corridor points towards a fast developing Lucknow city.
As for the numbers, the current metro route from Charbagh to Transport Nagar sees a footfall of 35,000 commuters everyday. This corridor runs along a length of 8.5-kilometres and is finally completely operational, covering a distance of 23-kilometres on every ride. With the opening of the entire North-South route of the metro, the footfall should rise to about 1 lakh riders every day by 2020.
To recall, the Lucknow metro North-South route covers a total of 21 stations in prominent areas such as Hazratganj, Indira Nagar, Lucknow University and several others. Another advantage, apart from connecting the city better, is that is provides a very cheap mode of transport for travelling over long distances within the city. The fact that you no longer have to be stuck in traffic, just adds to the appeal of the metro.
