‘Smart City’ Kanpur is all set for an upgrade with 42 ‘smart parking’ spaces across town, with sensors imported from Barcelona, Spain. The advanced instruments will detect the number of vehicles in a parking lot and the availability of vacant spaces. This will roll out a system of digital ease for the people, enabling them to pre-book parking places while avoiding traffic or chaos, due to unavailability at a later point.
Civic management receives boost with digital sensor parking lots
The ‘Smart Parking’ initiative was inducted under the ‘Smart City Mission’ about a year and a half ago, when Mahendra Tech Company won a tender to build 42 sensor parking lots at a budget of ₹5 crores. Out of these, 29 parking spaces will be dedicated to two-wheeler vehicles while the remaining 13 will be for 4-wheeler automobiles.
The project is in its last leg and work at all centres, except for Phool Bagh, has been completed. Reportedly, Kanpur’s first such operation is set to begin at the Kargil Park, within two days.

A mobile-generated option to book a parking space will be available at all these places, soon. The number of vehicles parked and vacant spaces will be updated at the Integrated Control and Command Centre, after each booking is made. All other information and details about the digital system will be appraised to the public by means of display boards, across 400 locations.
