In a recent announcement, the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation stated that all metro trains plying over the 9 km long ‘Priority Corridor’ between Motijheel and IIT Kanpur will have 3 carriages each, unlike Lucknow metros trains which have 4 coaches. Each carriage will be equipped with a capacity for 950-1,000 people. However, the UPMRC has also announced that these trains can be expanded by one more coach, totalling up to four carts each, to accommodate increased load of ridership.
Equipped with ‘cross-arm’ pier cap, metro stations can be extended later
The Kanpur Metro installed its first ‘cross-arm’ pier cap at the IIIT-K station yesterday, which will help to extend the length of the platform in future. In the first phase of the project, all metro stations in the city have been designed to be 80 m long, which can hold up to 4 train coaches. With these pier caps, on either side of the platform, the length of the station can be stretched over by 60m in the future, to a total length of 140 m. According to the current plans and designs, the stations can hold 4 coach long trains, however, with the extension, the holding capacity will raise to station 6-coach long trains.
The State Metro Corporation has stated that each of its 9 stations will be equipped with four cross arms each, besides the Motijheel Metro Station, which will have about seven pier caps. The arrangements of these pier caps will be the same for all stations except the ones at Metrojheel, given the increased number and SPM Hospital due to the overhead electric line.
The Metro engineers have decided that 2 pier caps will be installed at each, opposing ends of the stations, however, at the SPM Hospital, the pier caps will be arranged to have three cross arms on one side and another one on the opposite side. On the other hand, the UPMRC has assured that the Motijheel Metro Station will have 5 arms on one side and the remaining 2 on the other.
Pollution Control Systems at Kanpur Metro
Besides this arrangement, the Kanpur Metro will focus on environment-friendly and sustainable technology, to curb pollution and any other harm to the environment. As per reports, two anti-smog guns have been deployed on the preparation yard between the casting yard and IIT to Motijheel, which keeps spraying water continuously in the air. Also to control the dust blowing at the construction site on the priority section route, a team of 20 people had been engaged in water-fogging with the help of eight tankers.
Kanpur Metro to schedule a train every 5 minutes
The Kanpur Metro has drafted a schedule which has set the train frequency for every 5 minutes on the ‘Priority Corridor’. This route, stretched over 9 km, extending from Motijheel to IIT Kanpur will have 9 stations, one located at every kilometre.
The Kanpur Metro Officials have announced that the construction work is in full swing on this route, which will conclude by November 2021, ready to be tested for the trial runs. Kanpur Metro will kickstart commercial run in December 2021 or latest by January 2022. As per reports, by the year 2024, Kanpur will be home to an overall count of 39 metro trains. These trains will run between 30 stations located on two routes in the city.
