One of the most densely populated cities of Uttar Pradesh and an industrial hub, Kanpur’s ever-increasing population is directly proportional to the swelling number of vehicles which lead to massive congestion. To meet these long-term traffic demands of the city, the construction of Kanpur Metro with a 6-car train configuration which is similar to that of Lucknow and other cities is in progress. Presently the UP metro team has successfully developed more than half of the pile caps on the 9 km priority corridor stretch, between IIT Kanpur and Moti jheel area.
167 U-Girders have been cast; 84 of them is already in place
Out of the overall 506 pile caps of the utility corridor, 258 of them have been prepared. These pile caps are constructed first, so that the pillars can be erected on them. The work of stowing the base of the beam for the tracks at the IIT Metro station is progressing speedily as well and a track beam as far as 20 meters has been laid down already.
The casting of U-girders, pier caps and double T-girders is advancing as well. 167 U-Girders have been cast, out of which the construction of 84 U-Girders have been successfully concluded. The construction of double T-girders is also going on continuously to form the basis of concourse level at Kalyanpur and SPM metro stations.
According to reports, by the year 2024, Kanpur will be home to an overall count of 39 metro trains. These trains will run between 30 stations located on two routes in the city and if the pursuit continues to be seamless, the trials will be held by the 31st of July, 2021. The civil construction work of the Kanpur Metro utility corridor is moving forward even during this pandemic and reportedly, the European Investment Bank (EIB) has recently sanctioned a loan of Rs.5,551.99 Cr for this venture. This metro project is expected to lessen the traffic congestion on the roads and pollution levels too, can be brought under control after its commencement.
