The Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount in Bandra is ready to reopen after extensive restoration that began in 2023. Initially, services were to continue during the project, but the church was fully closed in October 2024, with religious activities shifted outside. Conservation architect David Cardoz, along with Ainsley Lewis, led the restoration, focusing on reviving original early-20th-century materials such as wood and cast iron.
Architectural features
The church follows a cruciform layout, aligned north-south, but does not fit into a single architectural style. It can be described as quasi-Gothic, with spires and pointed windows adding to its elevation. During the work, the team uncovered paintings and commemorative stone slabs previously kept away from public view. These artefacts are planned to be displayed in a small museum within the church.
As per reports, the church will be inaugurated after the Feast of Mother Mary on September 8, either by Archbishop John Rodrigues or Cardinal Oswald Gracias. Further, Bandra Fair will be held from September 14 to 21.
