In an attempt to improve the existing medical infrastructure in the state, the government of Uttar Pradesh has decided to upgrade six medical colleges by starting super specialty medical facilities from November 12. For this, a separate block dedicated to super specialty will be set up at the medical colleges of Kanpur, Agra, Prayagraj, Meerut, Jhansi and Gorakhpur. With this, treatment of serious diseases related to the kidney, liver, heart and nervous system will be available in these cities, so that patients do not have to rush to neighbouring cities for treatment.

Under the ambit of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), super-specialty blocks of 200 beds have been set up at six medical colleges of the state. Reportedly, each of these blocks have been built at a cost of around ₹300 crores. Notably, these super-specialty blocks were launched in certain cities including Jhansi and Prayagraj earlier as well. Even though the functioning of these blocks were affected by the lack of specialist doctors, these units are all set to run again. As of now, 114 posts have been filled out of the total 269 vacancies at these units.

To facilitate this initiative, super-specialty doctors who have completed their Doctoral of Medicine (DM) and Master of Chirurgiae (MCh) degrees this year in medical institutions and medical colleges have been deployed here. After signing the mandatory bond which is valid for two years, these doctors will work as Assistant Professors. Further, in the next six months, the second batch of doctors will also be ready to take charge, pushing the super-specialty blocks to run at full capacity.
