Back in the beginning of the Swachh Survekshan 2019, Lucknow got voted as one of the most “cleanest city in the country”. Back then the city was bubbling with activity, Municipal corporation as well as people were on high alert about the waste disposal and cleanliness of the city. Yet the ground reality remained far from clean, the city has to go leaps and bounds when it comes to cleanliness and hygiene. And then there is an issue of cattle, that needs to be tackled- the omnipresent “gau” (cow), the major cause for congestion and roadblocks.
Taking a strict view on the same, the Lucknow bench of Allahabad high court directed civic bodies in the city to get roads free of garbage and cattle.

What’s the update?
Allahabad high court’s Lucknow bench has directed Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC), Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) and UP Housing and Development Board (UPHDB) to make the roads of Lucknow free of stray cattles, garbage and illegal dairies.
The court took an extremely strict approach towards the entire matter and asked the civic bodies to submit a report about the entire matter by next week. The court even warned the bodies against fabricating these reports and even asked LMC to file affidavits of the contractors and agencies who have been given the contract of cleaning city as well as of the supervisors who monitor their work, TOI reports.

Why the need?
Lucknow has forever faced issues with road congestion and pollution. These measures will not only ensure that the roads are no longer an eyesore and the pollution is kept in check. Back in 2017 when CM Yogi Adityanath first came into power, he had given the civic bodies a 15 day ultimatum to clean the city and come up with better waste disposal methods. Yet no significant action had been taken by the bodies to rectify the issue.
The move comes as a smack on the head reminding the civic bodies that the city and its cleanliness is there responsibility. Let’s hope that the issues are resolved soon and the courts don’t have to intervene and remind the civic bodies of their responsibilities.
