Lucknow’s King George’s Medical University (KGMU) has introduced a major relief initiative for medically serious patients, offering free or concessional train travel across India. A dedicated Jan Suvidha Kendra on campus will issue railway passes to eligible patients, simplifying a previously cumbersome process.

KGMU’s Medical Superintendent, Dr. Suresh Kumar, explained that while Indian Railways already provides free and concessional travel for patients with critical illnesses, many have been unable to benefit due to a complicated application process. The new Jan Suvidha Kendra aims to streamline this, making it easier for patients to obtain travel passes.
Eligible patients including those with cancer, thalassemia, heart and kidney conditions, TB, AIDS, sickle cell anaemia, and more can avail free travel in general coaches and discounted tickets in AC classes. The centre is expected to greatly benefit thousands of outstation patients seeking treatment at KGMU.
The university is also in talks with railways to set up an on-campus reservation counter, ensuring seamless ticketing. This move is expected to significantly reduce financial and logistical burdens for vulnerable patients and their families.
